Library introduction

Xiang-Shan Branch was established on November 1, 1985 under the hard work and effort by the elder in Xiangshan, Mr. Chen Pan-Hui. Senior Chen worked very actively to attain basic construction funds from the central, provincial, and county government. He and his brothers donated one million dollars together in total to build the library. At that moment, they named the library in their father’s name, “Chen Yang Jing Library.” After Hsinchu City Cultural Center was established on October 31, 1986, the library was transferred to the Cultural Center for management. In 1992, it started planning of library automation. In July 1994, it completed the retrospective conversion of library resources was completed in July of 1994, thereby allowing the library to finally embark on its journey of automation. In April of 1996,  Xiang-Shan was formally connected to the Hsinchu City Library of Cultural Affairs Bureau.

Xiang-Shan Branch was originally located on the second floor at the assembly hall in Hsiang-Shan Primary School. In 2010, it was closed because of the demolition and reconstruction of the assembly hall. A soft opening was performed on November 30, 2012, and the school formally opened to the public on December 6. The new library is located on the first floor at the assembly hall in Hsiang-Shan Primary School. The curvy roof of the building and the vocabularies taped on the windows are intended to present liveliness and fun of the classroom, infusing a sense of refreshing energy to the urban landscape in Xiangshan. As for the interior design, to respond to the uniqueness of the building, various collections are presented in different areas, including tidy Age-restricted Materials Area, the cozy Magazine/Newspaper & Audio-Visual Area, the Children’s Reading Area that emphasizes on interactive space, and the neat Study Rooms. The tone is minimalist style in the contrast of black and white with simple decoration in yellow flowers and green leaves; under the gentle touch of sunshine, an elegant, lively, and bright reading ambience is created.

Library introduction:

Nan-Liao Library was established in July 2004 under the direction of the former mayor Lin. Ever since its establishment, it has been a storehouse of reading and studying for locals and students. However, because the building is small and antiquated plus the increasing needs on reading among the public over time, the reading space and equipment in the library as well as book resources are obviously unable to satisfy patrons’ needs. Coinciding with the space renovation program, “public library reading environment,” promoted by Ministry of Education over the past few years, for the purpose of ensuring local residents enjoy a better quality reading space and richer book resources, a subsidy of NT$1.65 million was granted in June 2012 through the effort of the city government and the district office teams as well as the matching grant of NT$0.74 million from the city government, a total of around NT$2.4 million was granted for renovation project. In August of the same year, it started the overall planning and design while in December, the project contracting was awarded. The renovation was conducted from January to May, 2013, and the library reopened to the public on May 25 in the same year.

Operational objectives:

(1)Creating a cozy and natural reading environment that is centered on patrons as well as constructing a small public library that is with quality.

(2)Strengthening specialty management by promoting parent-child collaborative reading, and providing reading resources that satisfy educational needs for different family structures to make the library the local resource center for parent-child collaborative reading.

(3)Developing special collections: The objectives are children’s book, parenting, and marine fishery culture.

(4)Planning diverse reading activities to make the library the best venue for life-long learning and elderly learning for the local residents and create good neighborhoods that enjoy reading.
